  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from JHBryanA -- Fantastic Intro History to the early Labor Movement : The central topic of this book is the St. Louis Commune of 1877. However, it's also much more. I didn't expect the author to provide an excellent, well-written intro history to the broader mid to late-nineteenth century European and American labor movements. Despite the book's relatively short length, the author manages to include great summary histories of a wide-range of topics, including the Revolutions of 1848; the Paris Commune; the rise, fall, and intellectual currents within the First International; the broad status of the American economy and working-class post-Civil War; the Great Railroad Strike of 1877; and of course the St. Louis Commune. One of the great themes the author drives home is the fundamentally internationalist character of the class struggle. The working-class can only win by working together as workers of the world. The international character of Capital requires an equally international opposition. Hence why "Workers of the World, Unite!" has so strongly defined the nineteenth and early-twentieth century communist movement. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from joseph cusumano -- Excellent chronicle. : Very interesting and easy to read. Detail is superb. Must have involved years of research. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Lvstl -- Thought provoking : The meticulously researched and well-written St. Louis Commune of 1877 provides a readable and compelling account of a little known time in history when the juxtaposition of other historic events briefly gave workers powers they had never seen before. In light of current labor shortages, we can only wonder if there are parallels to today. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2021 )
